How a conveyor chain works
How a conveyor belt or chain works isn’t that hard to understand. It’s a belt or chain that runs with the help of bearings and idlers. The system is used in most industries and is used for moving components, products, and items across a conveyor belt, which makes these items go through different sections of the industrial plant. It’s an endless belt because the belt keeps on rolling endlessly as it rolls over a cycle. Its ends are joined together and roll over the bearings, idlers, where pulleys are also used to make it function properly. Industries that need materials to move from one section to another need a conveyor chain system.
How lubricating a conveyor chain is different
A conveyor chain lubrication system differs from the rest of the lubrication systems due to its different purpose and components, making it unique. Various parts need a lubricant to lubricate them and prevent them from damage, wear, and tear.
Every component of a conveyor chain has varying lubrication requirements. In other machines, there might be one lubricant that fits the compartment and enables a machine to run smoothly as a whole. This isn’t the case in conveyor chain machinery. Every component performs a different function and needs a different type of lubricant that meets that specific requirement of that component.
The following are some of the common parts of a conveyor chain system that need lubrication:
- Drive motor
- Fluid couplings
- Pulley bearings
Lubricating pulley bearings
Pulley bearings play a very dynamic role in a conveyor chain machine. It performs the function of transferring the direction of force, transmitting power, and also provides tension to the conveyor belt. Head drum pulley and tail drum pulley are the names given to the belt that runs the whole belt and the one that is attached to the end of the belt, respectively. Pulley bearings don’t involve high speed or heavy load handling. Its lubrication is simple, and a mineral oil grease containing the complex of lithium soap can serve the purpose well.
Lubricating the drive motor
Bearings are used in a drive motor to hold the rotor (a component of the motor). These bearings need lubrication, which must be composed of grease. Grease has an oil-based thickening element that lubricates the parts of the motor.
Another component is the fluid couplings, which are there for transmitting the kinetic energy from one shaft to another shaft. Fluid coupling reduces the torque in a conveyor chain machine when first started. Fluid coupling requires an optimum level of lubricant to transmit power.
Gear couplings also need lubrication in order to run smoothly. Gear coupling is a device that joins two shafts that can tolerate little misalignments. Grease lubrication is the best option for gear couplings.
As far as lubricating idlers is concerned, they have sealed bearings. These bearings are lubricated once in a lifetime. This is because they are sealed, and therefore you can’t replace the lubricant.
